The history of RRS DISCOVERY MODEL SHIP
Flashback to 1901 when she was launched, this vintage and classic RRS Discovery ship model reminds you of the last traditional wooden three-masted ship to be built in the United Kingdom. Bringing the history vibe home with our historical gunboat, longboat and battle ship model collections.
The RRS Discovery was a barque-rigged auxiliary steamship that journeyed to the Antarctic on the famous Discovery Expedition. Launched in 1901, she was the last traditional three-masted wooden ship ever built in the United Kingdom. Initially serving as a merchant ship before and during WWI, Discovery was named the first Royal Research Ship of the British government in 1923. Her very first mission was the British National Antarctic Expedition, spearheaded by Robert Falcon Scott and Ernest Shackleton. On this pioneering voyage, Scott and Shackleton conducted key research into the oceans, marine life, and whale populations of the Antarctic. To this day, the RRS Discovery remains a powerful symbol of curiosity, ambition, and adventure.
